The weaving tradition of Varanasi, India's spiritual capital, is believed to date back to the fourteenth century and finds mention in ancient Indian epics and texts. The Mughal emperors were among the greatest patrons of Benarasi textiles and, as a result, traditional Indian patterns and motifs acquired a distinct Persian aesthetic with intricate floral and foliate designs.
