In Mysore, the grandest of Dussehra spectacle awaits its people every year. Once a princely state, the state government of Karnataka organizes the traditional festival in the durbar hall of the Mysore Palace. It is believed that the Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon king Mahishasura after a fierce battle. She is brought in a golden mantapa atop an elephant among the thousands of visitors, the Royal couple also takes part in this grand parade. The Mysore Palace is lit with thousands of lights to mark the festival that has been celebrated for more than 400 years.
